STORAGE TIPS

Get the most out of your storage space with these simple, practical tips designed to protect your belongings during your stay.
Packing your storage unit properly is just as important as choosing the right facility. Taking a few extra steps during preparation can help protect your belongings and keep them in great condition while in storage. Use the tips below to prevent damage, extend the life of your items, and ensure everything stays organized and protected.

  • Determine whether your items should be stored in boxes, totes, or specialized containers. Consider purchasing protective packing supplies for fragile or valuable belongings.
  • Clean, disinfect, and thoroughly dry refrigerators, freezers, stoves, and other appliances before storing. Keep appliance doors slightly open and stack only when appropriate.
  • Clean and dry all electrical equipment prior to storing.
  • Prevent rust by wiping down metal surfaces and applying a light coat of machine oil before placing them in your unit.
  • Pack books, files, and documents flat, filling empty spaces in boxes with bubble wrap or newspaper.
  • Hang clothing before folding it into cartons, and make sure all garments, linens, drapes, and curtains are clean and dry to avoid attracting pests.
  • Wrap dishes and glassware with bubble wrap or other padding. Keep similar items together and fill gaps with packing peanuts, bubble wrap, or newspaper.
  • Disassemble furniture and place pieces on cardboard or plastic sheeting before setting them on pallets.
  • Stack lightweight chairs “seat to seat,” and avoid placing heavy furniture on top of one another. Cover all upholstered items with breathable cotton dust covers.
  • Wrap lamp bases in padding and store lamp bases and shades separately.
  • Keep holiday decorations in their original boxes when possible. Wrap delicate ornaments with bubble wrap or newspaper.
  • Store CDs, tapes, records, and other media in airtight cartons or sturdy boxes.
  • Cover computer screens and large TVs with dust covers, adding bubble wrap if they’ll be stored near furniture or equipment.
